Steam Engines & Other Beasts

Douglas. Built from a handful of Meccano bits, a Mamod stationary boiler and cylinder, plus other sundry bits and bobs. Based on 'Victoria', the unsuccessful engine built by John Slee for the Plynlimon & Hafan Tramway, this geared loco is quite powerful and also quite controlled considering it is basically a Mamod! Has a reputation for slopping burning meths everywhere so has to be driven with care and attention...

Bertie. The familiar gas-fired 0-4-0 by Roundhouse, this loco was a surprise 40th birthday present and is the stalwart of the Cobbybrook Light Railway. The challenging nature of the line tests this loco's reputation for docile and controlled running to the limit, so fitting of rc has just taken place.

Barbara. A modified Mamod kit, bought for me by my wife (hence the name) many years ago. As with all Mamods this loco can be rather lively! Conversion to something looking like an early Festiniog loco by George England has been relatively successful and looks good when couple up to suitable FR stock.

Another view of 'Barbara'. Note the gap between the tank sides and top to allow adequate ventilation for the spirit burner. Finished all over with heat resistant black!

Jessie. Built from the IP Engineering kit, this loco is very powerful and slogs away until the cows come home. Sometimes 'Jessie' and 'Bertie' run together double-headed, creating a very powerful combination. Judicious weathering has improved this basic kit.

Doubleheaded action! 'Jessie' helps to hold back 'Bertie' on the downgrades and keep things moving round the tighter bends. 'Bertie' will eventually have radio control fitted to make this unecessary.

Under construction...come back soon for details…
